Set in socialist Bulgaria during the summer of 1967, the film follows the story of a 19-year-old Bulgarian woman named Snescha.

In the coastal resort of Sunny Beach, Snescha meets Franz, an 18-year-old from Austria. Despite their language differences—Franz speaks German and Snescha speaks Bulgarian—they develop a romantic relationship. By 1975, the couple marries and relocates to Austria. Snescha becomes pregnant and gives birth to twin daughters. Franz later embarks on an expedition to Iran and Pamir. While he is away, Snescha has a third daughter.

Franz's subsequent adventures include a journey across the Niger River to Bamako in Mali. After returning to Austria, he purchases a house on credit. In 1987, he plans a bicycle tour through Tibet, against Snescha's wishes, and travels to Pakistan, from which he does not return. As a result, Snescha is left to care for their daughters and manage the household expenses.
